How To Choose The Best Scuba Diving Locations
![]() |
You want to find the best scuba diving locations simply so that you can have the most awesome diving experience of your life! Scuba diving in the local lake or off the beach is pointless. All you will see is silt and sand. You need to find scuba diving locations that offer delicate coral castles and exotic salt water fish. Perhaps the purpose of your trip is to observe sharks or dolphins. Determine what you want to experience during your dive trip, then find scuba diving locations that feature that dream.
The first stop in finding appropriate scuba diving locations is to visit your local dive shop. The owner and customers are often experienced divers. Tell them what you want to do during your diving trip, and they can often suggest appropriate scuba diving locations. Ask if they have ever dived at those locations, and ask to see photos or video if they have any. These visual references will show you whether the suggested scuba diving locations match that perfect trip you have in your mind.
Scuba clubs or societies can also help you find the best scuba diving locations. You may have to search the internet or phone book to find such clubs. The scuba shop owner may have information about contacting these societies. Attend several meetings, and tell the members that you are planning a diving trip. Then prepare to take some notes as the experienced divers try to top each other's diving stories with what they saw and where they saw it.
If you already have a destination in mind, call the hotel or chamber of commerce. Ask them to put you in contact with local tourist diving businesses. Tell them you are coming to dive, and ask them about the local scuba diving locations. Given the length of your stay and your interests, you can no doubt get several excellent recommendations about scuba diving locations.
Perhaps you don't need any recommendations about scuba diving locations. Maybe your lifelong ambition has been to dive near Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Perhaps your dream is to dive in one of Hawaii's marine sanctuaries or near a volcanic site. The Bahamas and Caribbean locations offer excellent scuba diving locations. Almost any idyllic tropical isle or locale is likely to offer excellent diving. Although these may be your ideal scuba diving locations, check with local officials first to see if diving is allowed within some of these protected areas.
