Experience Amazing Scuba Diving In The Florida Keys

Scuba diving in the Florida Keys means that Americans don't have to travel to exotic locations to have exotic diving experiences. The Florida Keys are comprised of about 1700 islands in an archipelago that extends from the tip of Florida. The island chain extends to the south-southwest to Key West, the westernmost inhabited island. The Florida Keys generally divide the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. This gives those looking for scuba diving in the Florida Keys double the choices.

The Florida Keys are made from the exposed portions of ancient coral reefs. There are also small transitional keys as well as barrier islands in the formation. The Keys are divided into upper, middle, and lower keys, with some outlying islands. Coral reefs make excellent diving locations, so scuba diving in the Florida Keys should be spectacular. This is especially true with both the Gulf and the Atlantic sides from which to choose.

Climate is ideal for scuba diving in the Florida Keys. Unlike most of Florida, the climate of the Keys is closer to that of the Caribbean. The climate is described as tropical "wet and dry." The hot, wet season occurs between June and October. During November through May, scuba diving in the Florida Keys undergoes a drier season. Expect frequent but brief afternoon thunderstorms when scuba diving in the Florida Keys. Take appropriate safety measures concerning being on the water during electrical storms.

Watch out for the weather! Florida and the entire Gulf area are prone to tropical storms and hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season is generally from the beginning of June to the end of November. Hurricanes take no notice of such schedules, so plan your trip for scuba diving in the Florida Keys accordingly. Islands in the Keys are only a few feet above sea level and subject to intense flooding during storms. If you are lodging on an island during your scuba diving trip in the Florida Keys, take all evacuation notices seriously. There are very limited evacuation routes from the Keys to mainland Florida.

Aside from weather concerns, your scuba diving in the Florida Keys is bound to be spectacular. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary contains the third largest coral barrier reef in the world. The Sanctuary abounds with seagrass fields as well as mangrove forests. The two oceans, the seagrass and mangrove areas of the Sanctuary, the balmy Caribbean climate, and the convenient proximity to the Florida mainland make scuba diving in the Florida Keys an unparalleled experience.
