Obtain Scuba Diving Certification Before Hitting The Water
![]() |
Scuba diving certification is an absolute necessity for anyone wanting to learn to scuba dive. You'll be depending on your life with the scuba equipment, so it is vitally important that you are professionally instructed on how to use it safely and properly. Most scuba diving certification can be obtained in any major city. Such facilities provide both out of water and underwater instruction in a swimming pool. A swimming pool is not the ocean, however, so be careful where you dive next.
In the U.S., recreational scuba diving certification is not run by a main agency. The industry is largely self-regulated by the trainers. However, there do exist many large scuba diving certification agencies that provide training for divers and diving instructors. Certifications from such an organization might be required before certain diving stores and companies will allow you to buy or rent their scuba gear. If you plan to dive in a foreign country, be certain to bring all your scuba diving certifications with you.
Canada maintains the American Canadian Underwater Certifications Inc. or ACUC. This scuba diving certification organization teaches safe diving practices, trains scuba diving instructors, and provides diving and instructor services. Ecological programs for divers are also provided.
The British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) is based in the UK and services UK divers and instructors. This scuba diving certification organization is the governing body for recreational diving in that country. Special attention is given to the relatively cold and low-visibility UK ocean waters, with an emphasis on rescue training.
CEDIP, or the European Committee of Professional Diving Instructors is the scuba diving certification body in Europe. This organization services European diving instructors, and represents 16 major European scuba diving certification organizations. CEDIP certifications are recognized around the world.
Professional Association of Diving Instructors or PADI is the U.S. based scuba diving certification organization. It is recognized as the world's largest recreational scuba diving training and certification organization. PADI operates offices in Europe, the Far East, New Zealand, and Australia, among other locations.
Scuba equipment allows you to enjoy the normally inaccessible underwater world. It can also save your life. It is your responsibility to obtain proper and effective scuba diving certification before attempting to use any diving equipment.
